Peter Jackson was one of the last survivors from that generation of artists that studied at Corsham Court Art College in the 1950s and was taught by a celebrated roll call of Artist Tutors including Peter Lanyon, William Scott, Adrian Heath, Peter Poterowski, Anthony Fry, Howard Hodgkin and Terry Frost. Their influences remained (as did their friendship) but Jackson always forged his own path.

He was mainly interested in the abstract but also (with varying degrees of engagement), the figure, landscape, prehistoric art and the objets trouvé. He had a life-long fascination with the colour black, maintaining that this isn’t a sombre colour and exists in a huge range of tones and hues. A key technique, his use of very heavy collage was exploited to create a trademark textural, almost relief surface to the canvas.

The exhibition aims to show the variety and diversity of this important artist with pieces representing the last 60 years of his work on canvas and paper.

Throughout his life, sculpture had always been a crucial part of his oeuvre with both construction and carving. Central to the exhibition will be an installation of his series of helmets and head forms in carved stone, bronze, wood and terracotta.
